Electronic Books The Future Of Publishing

Traditional paperback books could soon become as obsolete as cassette tapes and LPs, as leading publishing houses start to print their books electronically.

In an age where children are more interested in having an iPod and a MySpace account than the complete works of Charles Dickens, publishers are turning to digital books in an attempt to attract younger audiences.

Blair’s Advance for Memoir Said to Be About $9 Million

Tony Blair, the former prime minister of Britain, has agreed to sell his memoir for an advance of around $9 million, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

After a four-day auction, the book was bought by two divisions of Random House: Alfred A. Knopf in the United States and Canada, and Hutchinson in Britain. Sonny Mehta, chairman and editor in chief of Knopf, said that Mr. Blair intended to write a “serious and frank book” about his life and, in particular, his decade at 10 Downing Street.

Da Vinci Code Fans Can Pay £4,000 To Show Innocence Of The Knights Templar

Fans of The Da Vinci Code may think that £4,000 is a small price to pay for an exclusive document that clears the good name of the mysterious Knights Templar.

The Vatican is selling a limited edition of life-sized replicas of a giant forgotten parchment that absolves the mysterious knights of their status as heretics.

My Comment: That's all !!!!! Considering its uniqueness I would have expected various Islamic organizations in the West, the Middle East, or elsewhere to go all out in purchasing this item. In my view, whoever purchased it will get a fantastic return on his investment when Islamic groups and organizations realize what is out there.

A copy of the Quran can be freely downloaded from Bookyards here. Bookyards has a section dedicated to Islam here.

E-Books Multiply, But Who's Reading Them?

Caitlin Lyons labors in the towering stacks as bibliophiles trickle into Boston's Brattle Book Shop. Many are repeat customers, here to browse an eclectic collection - hundreds of thousands of loosely categorized tomes that spill from these two floors onto outdoor shelves in an empty lot.

It's an avalanche of paper, concedes Ms. Lyons, a recent English major with an ecosensitive streak. She acknowledges that this vast inventory, digitized, could shrink dramatically into an easily managed series of reads on a PC, PDA, or some dedicated device's screen. That, she says, would represent a loss. "Way too many things are becoming technological," she says, cradling a fragile-looking hardback copy of Benjamin Disraeli's "Sybil." "A bookshelf and a study? You can't do that on a disc."

My Comment: Being involved with digital libraries for the past 10 years has given me some perspective on where we were, where we are, and I hope on where we going. For our digital library (Bookyards) I have been to see an increase of 500% in the past year alone. There were only 20 digital libraries 7 years ago .... today there are over 800. A slowing down in growth has not yet happened......and will not in the next few years. If anything, newer formats and websites that focus on specific areas of study is what is now driving the growth of ebooks. When I look at the traffic stats for these sites, almost all of them are growing at a constant rate. Pirate book sites that are making available copyright materials (mainly from India and Eastern Europe) are experiencing unbelievable growth in readership. This is a trend that is not going to stop.

Research Libraries Close Their Books To Google and Microsoft

Several major research libraries have rebuffed offers from Google and Microsoft to scan their books into computer databases, saying they were put off by restrictions these companies wanted to place on the new digital collections.

The research libraries, including a large consortium in the Boston area, are instead signing on with the Open Content Alliance, a nonprofit effort to make digital material as widely accessible as possible. Libraries that agree to work with Google do so on Google's terms, which involve access to the material only through the Google search engine, as well as restrictions on how much of it can be downloaded.

My Comment: No surprise here. One of the many frustrations that I have when I use Google Books comes from not getting the book that I want asap. And when you do get the book you want, you are then confronted with only a few chapters, an incomplete version, and/or a huge list of possible books that their search engine has produced ..... which in turn results with the user (i.e. you and me) spending a good share of their time trying to find what we are exactly looking for.

The Open Content Alliance is a better way to go. It is easier to use, and the content that they have is more relevant to present needs and requests.

Update: The New York Times looks into this story also.

Books To Read This Weekend -- Part 5

Another weekend to spend reading books. Who needs football, hockey, visiting the in-laws, cleaning the house ..... just curl up in front of your computer screen and read the following:

The Black Death by Joseph P. Byrne
A great book on one of mankind's worst plagues.

The Opium War – England And China From 1840 to 1842 by Peter Ward Fay
This is probably one of the many reasons why Asia has always been leary of the west.

Ancient China and its Enemies by Nicola Di Cosmo
Another great book on the history of China

Science Fiction Quotations by Gary Westfahl
A definite for all science fiction fans.

To Kill A Mockingbird by Lee Harper
One of America's greatest classics of the 20th century, and Lee Harper's only novel.

Sex God Method by Daniel Rose ( +18 )
And I thought my ego was big....

Gimme! The Human Nature of Successful Marketing by John Hallward
A great marketing book.

Comandante Che: Guerilla Soldier, Commander, and Strategist, 1956-1967 by Paul J. Dosal
A confession to make. The anniversary of his death was a few weeks ago. People like myself who understand what communism is all about (and lived through it) can never understand why people in the west are always idolizing this murderer. But here is the book.

Global Catastrophes by Bill Mcguire
For those who like to be scared to death .... move aside Al Gore.

iCon Steve Jobs: The Greatest Second Act in the History of Business by Jeffrey S. Young and William L. Simon
I have followed Steve Jobs career for the past 25 years. Another great book to read about on the man.

Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig
Another great classic

Cry The Beloved Country by Alan Paton
Another classic. The plot is South Africa during apartheid.

The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin
A book made into a movie

Genocide Aliens by David Bischoff
For all you science fiction fans.

Vatican Publishes Knights Templar Papers

VATICAN CITY - It's not the Holy Grail, but for fans of "The Da Vinci Code" and its tantalizing story line about the Knights Templar, it could be the next best thing.

Ignored for centuries, documents about the heresy trial of the ancient Christian order discovered in the Vatican's secret archives are being published in a limited edition — with an $8,377 price tag.

They include a 14th-century parchment showing that Pope Clement V initially absolved the Templar leaders of heresy, though he did find them guilty of immorality and planned to reform the order, according to the Vatican archives Web site.

But pressured by King Philip IV of France, Clement later reversed his decision and suppressed the order in 1312.

Only 799 copies of the 300-page volume, "Processus Contra Templarios," — Latin for "Trial against the Templars" — are for sale, said Scrinium publishing house, which prints documents from the Vatican's secret archives. Each will cost $8,377, the publisher said Friday.

Dr. Phil Says OJ Book Is A Confession

Oscar Wilde Voted Greatest British Wit

One a playwright feted for his literary genius, the other a rock star renowned for his foul mouth: but Oscar Wilde and Liam Gallagher now share the accolade of being voted among Britain's greatest wits.

Wilde, who even on his deathbed remarked, "either those curtains go or I do", was voted number one in the list of comic masters, ahead of comedian Spike Milligan, who had engraved on his tombstone the epitaph "I told you I was ill".

Beyond Wikipedia: 20 References You Can’t Do Without

The Daily Revolver has made a list (which I agree with) on "a number of great references available to you that isn’t Wikipedia".

He has written a great post ..... so I am just going to quote him directly:

GENERAL RESOURCES

* Bartleby - This site has far more than quotes, you can find full texts here as well - poetry in particular.Citizendium - This is supposed to be the more “professional” Wikipedia. So far it’s not really taken off, but the information here is often a bit more “elite” but usually not as detailed.Answers.com - Answers.com is a sort of “commercial” Wikipedia. It makes use of the info on Wikipedia, combined with many other reference sties, to become a one stop shop. It also has a mobile site that I tend to use a great deal.ePodunk - If you’re looking for information regarding a city or place, it doesn’t get much better than ePodunk.
* Encylopedia Britannica - I know it seems awfully “old school” but this site is an excellent source of information and much more authoritative than Wikipedia.
* Scholarpedia - A step up from both Wikipedia and Citizendium in terms of scholarly respectability, it doesn’t have nearly as much information, but the articles have all been written by experts with peer review. An academic paradise!
* Okay, two sources that your college probably gives you access to. If you aren’t a student, sorry… but these are too good to ignore. You’ll need to see your local school librarian to see how to access these (or you may have a library website you can access it through.)
* JSTOR - You know all those stuffy journals around your professors office? And those articles in your course packets? This is pretty much that. For research it enormously useful.
* Oxford English Dictionary - The definitive resource when it comes to the English language. Not just for English majors, the OED (as it’s known) is useful for almost anyone in the social sciences.
* Wikiseek - When you absolutely, positively, must have the real thing - WikiSeek is Wikipedia with a better search engine. I would also suggest WikiMindMap for when you’re trying to get a better holistic grasp of a subject.

References for Specific Disciplines

* Online Education Database - This is a strange site, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it - but this link lists over 100 specific search and research tools, often relevant to specific subjects.
* MathWorld - if you have the great misfortune of having to take math, then this site can be of great help. Everything mathematics from Geometry to Calculus is covered by this site in great detail.
* GeoHive and Fedstats - These are both statistics sites, so if you need to know how many people. Fedstats allows public access to public agency statistics. Geohive is a bit cooler, primarily providing global statistics (gender populations, coal reserves, etc). I know, it’s so exciting I can’t stand it.
* Theoi and Encyclopedia of Mythology - Both excellent resources on the subject of mythology and ancient religions. This is useful information all across the humanities.
* Glossary of Poetic Forms - This will help you get through that English Literature class. You too can know the difference between a Canto and a Cento.
* Now, if you’re in my fields - these next three are excellent resources.
* Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and Foldop - Both of these are excellent sources on just about anything philosophy related. I use the Stanford site all the time.
* Religion Online - If you are a scholar of religion this is an excellent, excellent resource filled with many primary texts.

Bookyards has compiled the following list of resources according to specialty:

The Nobel Memorial Laureates in Economics: An Introduction To Their Careers And Main Published Works

On Monday October 15, 2007, the Nobel committee will be announcing their winner for the Nobel Prize in Economics.

While searching for information on the prize, I came across this book by Howard R. Vane and Chris Mulhearn in Avaxhome's Economics and Business section..

Quoting .....

"Erudite, accessible and lucidly written, this book provides a stimulating introduction to the careers and main published works of the Nobel Memorial Laureates in Economics. It will prove to be an invaluable reference book on key figures in economics and their path-breaking insights. The vignettes should also encourage the reader to sample some of the Laureates’ original works and gain a better understanding of the context in which new ideas were first put forward.
Original features of the book include: • a foreword by Professor Mark Blaug • a review of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, including a biographical guide to potential future winners • a table summarizing the Laureates’: year and country of birth; university and year of their first and higher degrees; their affiliation at the time of the award; broad field of study; and Prize citation • comprehensive individual entries on each of the Laureates (including their photographs), covering their careers and main published works • a glossary of selected associations, awards, institutions and societies.
"

This is an excellent book, one that I recommend for all those who enjoy mathematics and economics. It can be downloaded here or here.

For more books on economics, Bookyards has over 350 books on economics in its economics section.

Comandante Che: Guerilla Soldier, Commander, and Strategist, 1956-1967

Receive some comments from my post on Che a few days back. One of them included the following link to this book. The link to download this book is here.

Previous Post: Che Guevara Remembered 40 Years After Death

The Armenian Genocide.

The U.S. Congress is debating a resolution that would condemn Turkey for the genocide of the Armenians almost 90 years ago.

At the same time I was able to come across a book titled "The Great Game of Genocide: Imperialism, Nationalism, and the Destruction of the Ottoman Armenians" by Donald Bloxam.

The link to download this book is here.

Bookseller Of Kabul Extends His Trade With A Mobile Shop

From The Independent:

The Bookseller of Kabul has a new literary ambition: to take a bus across the rubble-strewn roads of his war-torn homeland offering a "mobile" bookshop service to those living in the most remote regions.

Shah Muhammad Rais gained fame after the Norwegian journalist Asne Seierstad wrote a bestselling novel, The Bookseller of Kabul, on his life running a bookshop in the Afghan capital after the fall of the Taliban.

Mr Rais, who regards himself as a books missionary, told the BBC World Service yesterday that he is seeking to satisfy Afghans' voracious appetite for books and reading, even in the midst of conflict and poverty. He said he had recently returned from northern Afghanistan after selling almost all his books in 40 days.

My Comment: After reading this story I will now never personally complain on how hard it is to run an online library.

Beowulf -- The Manuscript

Bookyards copy of Beowulf is here.

Che Guevara Remembered 40 Years After Death

Che was killed 40 years ago, and for better or worse he is being remembered for the next two days. The two articles that I have come across which discuss this anniversary and which I have linked to are the following:

Cuba Pays Tribute To Che Guevara -- BBC News
Che Remembered 40 Years After Death -- Yahoo News

My Comment: Personally ...... having parents that experienced the Communist system in Russia and knowing friends of the family that had experienced the worst under Stalin AND Castro ..... my perceptions of these Communist folk heroes is "slightly" ..... and I am using this term facetiously ...... different from what a number of young and idealistic university students may have.

Personal feelings aside, we at Bookyards have compiled a list of works by Che Guevara and related external links here.

Robert Hooke, Britain's Leonardo, Papers Go Online

The papers of Robert Hooke, a 17th century scientist hailed as Britain's answer to Leonardo, have gone on line so that his pioneering work can now be appreciated by a global audience.
The Hooke Folio (for broadband users)
Extracts from Hooke manuscript

Hooke (1635-1703), the first professional scientist, was always desperate for publicity and now, three centuries after Sir Isaac Newton allegedly tried to erase him from history, his papers have been made available on the internet by the Royal Society, London.

My Comment: This is so cool. This project reveals the best side of what the world wide web can provide.

40 Unusual Websites You Should Bookmark.

While browsing through Clipmarks I came across the following post ..... "40 Unusual Websites you should Bookmark". This is one of those posts that ..... even though they do not involve books ...... it is so cool that it should be posted.

Did Archimedes Discover Calculus?

For all math groupies, a thought provoking article from Science News Online on the possibility that Archimedes discovered Calculus centuries before Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz did.

I was surprise to find that when I did a search for him in Bookyards, I discovered that we do not have any works by him. I will be remedying this in the next few weeks.

We do however have an excellent book by T. L. Heath titled "Works Of Archimedes" which I strongly recommend.

Who Says Distributing Books Is An Easy Job

These two stories caught my eye this morning:

Gaza's Christian Bookseller Killed from the Independent, and New York City Libraries offer terror 'recruiting' Islamic texts from the New York Post.

I have been editing Bookyards for the past six years. During this time my only stress from this project has come from receiving a legal notice (from Stanford's Legal Department) on a math book that was copyrighted and should not have been in our server .... (we got rid of the book asap), and someone threatening us that The Koran was not authored by Muhammed (which we had put as the author for the Quran), but God himself.

Like Standard University ..... this reader was right about the Quran ..... but we made the decision to make the authorship of the Quran blank to avoid any problems with other religions.

It was only later that I realized from the tone and substance of his email that it was ...... to put it mildly ...... "you do this or else". It has been almost 4 years since that event, and it is an event that I am always remembering and reflecting upon.

Our visitor traffic from muslim countries account for less than one percent of our total traffic. Iran (among Islamic majority countries) ..... surprise surprise .... is our number one visitor, Saudi Arabia is number 2. Almost all of this traffic is directed towards our Religion & Spirituality -- Islam category, or to our section on Regional Middle East News.

Aside from that one experience, no one has bothered us with the content in Bookyards, nor has any country blocked access to Bookyards.

As for the article on Islamic texts that promote religious intolerance (which I have already looked at (an English version) after downloading them from a Middle East book forum .... it is hate material and will never have any place in Bookyards.

10 Most Fascinating Tombs in the World (With Pictures)

I know that this has nothing to do with books, but this blog post from Neatorama is so cool.

Books On Alternative Medicine

ABC News has an article today on "The Mystery Behind Alternative Cancer Treatment" .... a discussion on how cancer patients from Actress Farrah Fawcett and the late Coretta Scott King are now among the thousands of people who have turned to alternative approaches to cancer treatment when conventional medicine has failed.

At the same time while browsing through an Indian book site (hat tip to analog and other stuff) I came across a section that he has dedicated to books on alternative medicine.

Without hesitation, here is the list:

I guess he wants his work to speak for itself.

Clarence Thomas: A Silent Justice Speaks Out -- Part 1To- Part VII

From ABC news ....

Since Clarence Thomas joined the Supreme Court 16 years ago, he has largely remained silent, and his silence has become part of his mythology. He rarely speaks from the bench. He hasn't responded to legions of critics. His judicial opinions reveal a powerful voice, but his story had been written by others.

Now Thomas has chosen to speak, forcefully and bluntly, in his new book, "My Grandfather's Son," and in a series of interviews with ABC News over four days that can only be described as extraordinary for their scope and intensity. He talks with almost painful candor — all but unprecedented for a public official — about his life and personal struggles, his fears and failings, his anger and his regrets.

My Comment: I had the good fortune of meeting Justice Thomas ten years ago at an international conference that involved Canadian and American Lawyers. I was impressed with him them .... and I am sure the book will accurately reflect the man that met 10 years ago. I am definitely looking forward to this book when it hits the web.
